How to Prepare for an In-Home Newborn Photoshoot

Preparation is arguably the most important part of a newborn photoshoot. If your baby is prepped and ready for their session, you, your photographer, and your baby will have a fun and relaxed shoot.

Here's how to prepare for your in-home newborn photoshoot:

  • Choose the Right Age

Aim for a photoshoot within the first two weeks after birth when babies are sleepier and easier to pose. Don't schedule within the first few days--take that time to adjust to life at home with your newborn.

  • Schedule Around Baby's Routine

Schedule the shoot during a time when your baby usually takes a nap to ensure a calm and sleepy baby.

  • Create a Comfortable Environment

Make sure the room is warm and cozy to keep your baby comfortable. It might be a little uncomfortable for you, but if the temperature is too low, transitions between outfits as well as those adorable naked shots won't be pleasant for baby.

  • Gather Essentials

Set out all necessary items like diapers, wipes, a bottle, and pacifiers for quick access.

  • Select Outfits Before The Shoot

Have an idea of what outfits you want to put baby in. If you don't have the outfits yourself, ask your photographer what outfits they have in their client closet. If you do have a specific outfit that you want to use, let your photographer know so that they can plan around it.

  • Incorporate Personal Touches

Bring along meaningful items or heirlooms to personalize the photos, like jewelry, stuffed animals, or framed photos of loved ones.

  • Feed Baby Before and During the Session

Make sure that baby has a full tummy right before the shoot. This way, baby will be milk drunk and extra sleepy.

  • Be Flexible with the Process

Babies may not always cooperate; be prepared to have an alert baby and have patience during transitions.

  • Prioritize Comfort and Safety Over Perfection

Remember that capturing the moment and keeping baby safe is more important than achieving a flawless shot. Your photographer will know how to pose baby safely and will ask for your help when needed.

  • Add Family Involvement

Include siblings or parents in some of the shots for memorable family photos. If you have toddlers, make sure that everyone is practicing safe posing.

  • Keep Calm and Enjoy

Stay relaxed and enjoy the experience; happy parents make for happy babies.

Newborn shoots don't always go the way you want them to. Each of my newborns has been completely different. Some sleep the whole time and others never sleep at all. Either way, the photos are always adorable and the sessions make for some fun memories with your brand new baby.
